Who is Jesus

Who is Jesus to us?

Did you know that Christian songs that have the theme as Jesus as Savior are more popular than songs with the theme of Jesus as our Master? We are looking at...

Songs with Savior / grace themes → ~65–80%

Master / Lordship / obedience themes → ~20–35%

These statistics give us an idea that majority of Christians relate to Jesus more as just a Savior.

Let's look at what Paul wrote to the Colossians.

Colossians 1:13-18

13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

Firstly, let's consider the context. The Colossian Christians were facing many false doctrines where false teachers were entering the community and redefining their faith for them. So, Paul had to set this straight by defining to them who Jesus really is.

  1. Jesus is Savior (13-14)

"in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins."

  2. Jesus is God (vs 15)

"He is the image of the invisible God..."

In other words, he represents God and has the status of God.

  3. Jesus is Supreme over all (vs 15 & 18)

"He is... the firstborn over all creation... and in all things He may have the preeminence."

This verse does not mean that Jesus was the first of creations. The word "firstborn" means that He is the first and supreme over all. There is none like Him! Nothing comes close to Him.

  4. Jesus is Creator (vs 16)

"For by Him all things were created... all things were created through Him..."

  5. Jesus is Master (vs16)

"... all things were created... for Him."

So, not only did Jesus create all things, but they were created FOR Him.

There are so many important and beautiful aspects of Jesus, but yet, why are songs with themes of salvation and forgiveness more popular than others? Is our understanding of Him balanced?

I believe that when our perspective of Jesus is corrected according to what Paul had written here, we will begin to relate with Him in a way that is more pleasing to Him. Our relationship with Him will be more balanced and proper.

And I wish to emphasise on Jesus being Supreme and being our Master.

The fact that so many Christians are struggling with obedience and doing God's will is due to this fact that they have failed to see Christ as Supreme and Master! We forgot that we were bought at a price (1 Cor 6:20).

This is why I said that if we correct our perspective of who Jesus is, our lives will be corrected and realigned properly with Jesus.
