Discipleship is Following
In a world where there are plenty of "footsteps" to follow, it is easy to follow the wrong footsteps.
Discipleship is a relationship where we carefully choose someone to follow and imitate. We are all called to follow and imitate Jesus, by closely imitating Christlike people in our lives.
The discipleship that we believe in is one that involves the close following of another person. It is a relationship that is close, honest, and accountable. It should not be a "once a month" relationship, but rather, it requires frequency and close proximity.
In order for discipleship to work out and be effective, dedication and commitment should be given by the mentor and the disciple. Consider how Jesus devoted His time, personal space, and love to all His disciples, and how He demanded the same from them. Peter would not have been a proper disciple if his time was divided to fishing and other things in his life.
Discipleship is
Knowing & Doing
God's Will
Knowing God's will is a natural fruit of true discipleship.
Far too often are Christians busying themselves with many "good" things and we fail to discern between good and God. Too often are pastors just throwing people into random ministries without actually discovering God's gift and will for them.
We must be filled with the knowledge of His will (Colossians 1:9) and be doing the will of the Father (Matthew 7:21).
In a proper discipleship, a mentor will show you the ropes of discerning God's will and will genuinely guide you into walking in His ways.

Whether you are a new believer, or have been a believer for years, there will always be things to unlearn and relearn.
There will be old habits, wrong traditions, distorted ways of thinking that need to be removed. This is the old man that needs to be crucified in every believer and this is the biggest challenge in discipleship.
Simultaneously, there will be new things to "put on" as a disciple of Christ. Christ-centered values, standards of righteousness, new priotities, and a transformed mind according to Christ.
These 2 processes are exactly what discipleship is meant for. With accountability and truth, these things will be worked out through the course of time.
