How to choose a Christian Mentor?
I've seen way too many times how people do not choose their mentors wisely. What are the checkboxes that must be ticked when we are selecting a mentor?
Is it good enough that he has a deep knowledge of the Bible?
As long as you share the same hobbies?
"I must be able to vibe with him or her"
"He is a pastor, so he must be good"
What are your requirements?
Hebrews 13:7-9
7 Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. 9 Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines.
Mentors MUST walk their talk. Their faith (visible) and way of life must reflect the word of God.
We must carefully consider the outcome of their conduct and see if it matches Jesus and the word of God. It writes above that Jesus doesn't change! Do not accept a compromise in the name of relevance! If a mentor or a pastor falls short of any standard and gives you a reason that "times have changed", do not accept it!
If the Bible says that a pastor needs to have his family in order and in reverance towards God, then it needs to be so. If the Bible has indicated that people who serve need to be full of faith and the Holy Spirit, then it needs to be so. No excuses.
We must be very careful in choosing our mentors wisely because we are going to submit to them and learn from them. The reason why the standard of Christianity has been compromised over centuries is because we have been too careless with whom we learn from.
Be a responsible disciple by reading the Bible and knowing more about Jesus, then can you be in a position to compare the conduct of your mentor with Jesus.
